The Devil in the Kitchen: Sex, Pain, Madness, and the Making of a Great Chef By Marco Pierre White

book overview

“There hasn’t been a food memoir this deliciously wicked since Anthony Bourdain’s Kitchen Confidential.”—Portland Oregonian
The Devil in the Kitchen
is legendary chef Marco Pierre White’s memoir of growing up working-class in Leeds and going on to become a king in the culinary world—the original celebrity chef. The first British chef (and the youngest chef anywhere) to win three Michelin stars—and also the only one to ever give them all back—is known equally for his astonishing talent and for being a chain-smoking, pot-throwing enfant terrible of the kitchen. In The Devil in the Kitchen he takes readers on a revealing and raucous ride, featuring some of the biggest names in the food world and beyond. It’s truly a decadent feast for anyone who loves food or just a great story.

the french Pâtisserie

About Us

The French Patisserie bakery has been located ten miles south of San Francisco in the scenic coastal community of Pacifica, California since 1998.

It is here where our talented team transforms whole butter, cream, fresh fruits, and imported chocolate into the varied desserts using our modern facility. Our bakery boasts the latest in food safety programs such as HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point) methodologies including Recall and Traceability from raw materials to shipped goods. The facility is continually upgraded to benefit from the latest in food safety equipment such as temperature monitoring and metal detector devices to best ensure the health and safety of those that make and enjoy our desserts.

Once created, our desserts are cradled in our custom made and proprietary packaging to ensure the integrity of each item. The packaging not only maintains the presentation of the products, but also safeguards the dessert moisture, textures, and flavors from outside factors such as freezer burn and odors.

From our blast and storage freezers, our desserts are shipped to distribution and wholesale points in the U.S. and abroad.

The French Patisserie’s desserts are created by Frank Spasic, who was raised in Paris, France where he came to appreciate the finest French cuisine. After training at the Ferrandi in Paris to become a chef, Frank gravitated towards being a patissier. During a trip to California, Frank was inspired to bring his dessert concepts to the Bay Area, moved here permanently, and founded The French Patisserie.

Along with Frank’s wife Marta, a native Californian who spent several years in France and attended La Sorbonne and L’Institut Des Sciences Politiques, Frank combines his background, training, and love of the finest cooking to develop these outstanding desserts.

Marco Pierre White

After leaving Allerton High School in Leeds without any qualifications, White decided to train as a chef.

He began his training in the kitchen at the Hotel St George in Harrogate, North Yorkshire and later at the Box Tree in Ilkley, West Yorkshire. Arriving in London as a 16-year-old with "£7.36, a box of books and a bag of clothes" he began his classical training as a commis under Albert Roux and Michel Roux at Le Gavroche, a period that would lead Albert to describe him as "my little bunny".

At 24, Marco became Head Chef and joint owner of Harveys with a kitchen staff that included the young Gordon Ramsay and Heston Blumenthal.

He was awarded his third Michelin star at the age of 33 - the first British and youngest chef ever to achieve this.

History

Founded in 1867, Lip has a truly prestigious history, and has the recognition of being the “Renault” of the watch world in France. Before becoming the first in the market to become design led, Lip began by mass producing watches and chronographs for the French army and air force during First and Second World Wars. During the early 1970’s, changes in the market led to a need for product redesign. Seven high profile external and multi disciplined designers were drafted in to redesigning watches and create 2 unique collections. The outcome carved a promising pathway for the brand, whose styles can be seen nowadays with the likes of Diesel and Nixon. Of the seven designers, Roger Tallon (designer of France’s iconic TGV high speed train) has arguably been the most influential, and his work can now be seen in the Mach 2000 collection.

Nooka Story

“Nooka is the brainchild of artist and designer, Matthew Waldman. In 1997, Matthew had a flash-back to a first grade math class while staring at a large wall clock in a London hotel and was struck by how few options there were for time display. He then sketched his ideas for potential designs on a napkin and brought them back to New York. After working on the designs, he submitted them to his legal team, and indeed, they were unique enough to patent!

The linear and graphic representation of time with Nooka timepieces presents a more intuitive way to view time. The visual mass increases as time passes, giving weight to an ephemeral and abstract concept – creating a universal visual language.

Rather than just style the appearance of an object, Nooka’s reconceptualization is based on analytic and artistic underpinnings that incorporate trends in fashion and science. The approach is beyond any material product – it is a concept, a method, a mindstyleTM.

Beyond international style, the search for a universal language is the common theme that all nooka products are conceptually based, whether a timepiece, fashion, or something unexpected. look for more from Nooka in 2009!

Nooka Inc. is based in New York City with an office in Tokyo Japan.”
